Expressive Handmade Books by Alisa Golden

Alisa Golden's books have always been my favorites; this one's about making books that tell stories. As she notes, "I have made art for pleasure; I have made art compulsively in crisis; I have made art in grief to relieve pain." This volume helps unlock our stories and reflects Alisa's teaching approach "...people have different reasons for making art and they work in different ways. It's my desire to dig more deeply and find out what moves people, what their memories tell about them and how they can accept or change theselves through their art." Along the way, Alisa eaches more than 30 wonderful book forms (circle accordions, flags, side bindings, books with multiple paths) completing the instructions with examples of her own work and from seven contributing artists including Heidi Kyle. Excellent. 8.5'x10", 144 color pp, pb.

Painted Paper: Techniques & Projects for Handmade Books & Cards

Painted Paper: Techniques & Projects for Handmade Books & Cards by Alisa Golden. Calling all paste paper addicts!! If you are mesmerized by the unlimited possibilities of making your own decorated paper this is an amazing tour. Alisa Golden begins with terrific advice on paper, inks, paints, pigments & dyes, watercolor crayons and texture paste and proceeds with enchanting examples of handmade books made with the painted paper techniques she clearly teaches. I was particularly enamored with layering on acrylic inks, masking, making marks with eyedroppers and using smaller pieces of large painted paper that are transformed when cut into smaller parts. Alisa closes with instruction for the handmade books themselves. Especially recommended to fans of Judy Melvin. 8.5”x10”, 176 pp., hb. Available January 2008.

Incredibly simple technique to emboss covers!

Inspired and inspiring. The final 16 pages feature books by “state of the art” bookmakers whose books push the boundaries of the definition of a book, play with light and shadow. For beginners through advanced bookmakers. 8.5”x10”, 128 pp., pb.
