Foundational is an unusual creature. Its core existence revolves around being thoroughly consistent, both in its spacing and letter shape. It is a humanistic broad-edged bookhand used for its ultimate readability within text, its warm, compatible aesthetic, and even overall texture. It holds its own identity while pairing well with pointed-pen scripts.

Foundational Hand: How to Write It, How to Use It – All Skill Levels
Disclaimer: This class is easier to understand if the student has had some exposure to the broad-edged nib and
how it generally operates. If you have not any experience, whatsoever, Tamara will be offering an introductory
information and trouble-shooting session on Monday, the day of Registration/Check-in

This full-day workshop is an in-depth overview of its origin and development from 10th-century psalters by its modernizer, Edward Johnston. We’ll apply his 7-step analysis to gain a deeper understanding of the power Foundational possesses through its elegant simplicity. This is a two-part workshop. The first half (morning) will be a history lecture with the instructor’s demo and discussion of letterforms. The second half (afternoon) will involve hands-on practice and application with an accompanying Q & A and clinicstyle troubleshooting session. While this workshop is appropriate for beginners to be exposed to this broadedged style, some experience with a broad-edged nib is practical and useful.* This class also accommodates intermediate and advanced levels, serving as both an academic analysis and refresher/fine-tuning exercise.

Class Supplies

Borden and Riley 37 Boris Marker Layout Bright White Translucent Bond Pad, 14x17”- 50 sheets; Higgins Eternal bottled ink (or a tube of gouache in color of your choice, if you want to mix your own ‘ink’); Speedball size C-2 nib with straight holder of your choice (wooden or Speedball standard black plastic); mechanical pencil and white rubber eraser; 12” ruler, Mixing containers, eye droppers, and water, and other certain supplies will be provided by the instructor.
