It writes very precisely so I can see why people like it for scanning. I bought it because I like trying new black inks.

  • Do not underestimate this ink! A calligrapher's must-have/best kept secret. 5

First of all, I owned a few version of Higgins ink, and they can be confusing: there's Higgins Eternal PERMANENT black (avoid), Higgins Eternal Black MAGIC (the dropper bottle, avoid), Higgins Calligraphy Waterproof Black Ink (avoid). None of them works with either pointed pen or broad edge. I was looking for a tried-and-true ink that is not sumi and scans well, and a friend recommended this. The trick is to purchase the right ink (which is this product: "Higgins Eternal Black Ink" -- on the bottle it just says "Higgins Eternal Black Ink") and add some gum arabic to desired consistency/hairline. It works on pretty much every paper I tried, even those which tend to bleed (such as office store's envelope) Sadly, if you go to Higgins' website, this particular ink is no longer available there, I wonder if it has been discontinued? I'm glad P&IA carries this and I will continue to purchase this ink.
