Cast Shadows in Watercolor with Andreas Hentrich

Friday, October 17, 2025
9am – 4pm

This course is suitable for beginners and those who would like to try this technique, which is rarely used in botanical painting. The main aim is to get a feeling for the pastosity of the oil paint and the structure of the canvas. Very impressive results can be achieved for both small and, in particular, large formats. As this is a day course, we will concentrate on a small format. We will use a primed canvas panel (available in art supply stores). We will use the allaprima technique, i.e. we will finish an area of the motif while the paint is wet and corrections are possible. We do not use any harmful solvents or painting mediums.

Supplies:

  • primed canvas panel (fine structure, about 10 x 12 inch)
  • set of brushes for oil painting (synthetic, round, pointy, fan)
  • if possible, small table easel
  • palette
  • to clean brushes: tissues or toilet paper and a small glass or saucer
  • to clean hands: soap and skin creme are sufficient

Please wear clothes that may get dirty. If you already have a set of oil paints you are familiar with, you are welcome to use them. To save time, it is advisable to make a pencil sketch of your own motif on the canvas board in advance and bring the motif template with you as a photo print on paper. This will allow us to start mixing and applying the paint straight away. Experience has shown that the paint dries after 1-2 days, i.e. by the end of the conference.

The oil paints (tubes from Lukas and Schmincke) will be provided.
