Designed specifically for preparing and shaping feather quills, this quill knife is essential for anyone working with tough or brittle feather shafts. A sharp edge is critical when cutting quills to avoid splitting the barrel, and this knife delivers the precision needed for clean, controlled cuts.
The blade is carefully shaped with one straight side and one curved side—ideal for the variety of cuts required in quill making. The straight edge allows for accuracy in basic shaping, while the curved side makes it easier to perform the scooping cuts needed to form a proper nib. The curve helps guide the blade naturally into the correct shape, unlike a fully straight blade which tends to push forward rather than follow the necessary arc.
To maintain the fine edge, Anne Stephens recommends honing the blade frequently with a micro-fine polishing compound on a leather strop. In a pinch, smooth cardstock or even flat cardboard can substitute.
