Tallgrass Prairie Flower Seedpods on Vellum with Carol Woodin

Friday, October 17, 2025
8am – 4pm

Taking advantage of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s collection of prairie plants, our subject will be seedpods of these unique plants. This day-long immersion into painting in watercolor on vellum will alleviate anxiety and increase confidence in working with this beautiful material. We’ll mix a range of cool and warm browns and neutrals to bring naturalistic color variation to these distinctive subjects. Artists will learn to build layers, increasing color intensity and form, while taking advantage of vellum’s best qualities. Paintings will be either complete or nearly so by the end of the day.

Supplies:

  • Vellum: Students can bring their own vellum that they have purchased in advance, or you can purchase vellum from Paper & Ink Arts at the Conference. Recommend a 5 x 7 inch or 8 x 10-inch piece of vellum.
  • 2 Lead Holders, one with H lead, one with 4H (the kind you sharpen in a pencil pointer)
  • Pencil pointer
  • Magnifier if needed
  • Magic Rub eraser, and a white plastic click eraser is useful (i.e. Tombow Mono Zero)
  • Excellent quality Kolinsky sable brushes. #2, #1, #0 (Winsor and Newton Series 7, Steinberg Superior, Raphael 8404, or some similar brushes with excellent points.)
  • Water container
  • Your own palette, preferably a ceramic or porcelain palette or white plate for mixing.
  • Small sheet of drawing and tracing paper
  • If you need a portable personal desk lamp please bring one. Our class will be held at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.
  • Your own watercolors, we can work with whatever palette you use.
