The purpose of this workshop is to become introduced to, then immersed in the world of Gothicized Italic writing. This fever dream of Edward Johnston begs the questions, “How Gothic is it… how Italic is it? Can these two lettering styles become a successful hybrid?”
Learning the answers will grant insight to the core nature of this hand and its rightful place in history, as well as initiate its application into current calligraphic trends. Participants will explore how to bring grace through means of proper stroke proportion and balance, as well as how to “corner” and manipulate the nib’s broad edge: the key to introducing crisp and sharp lettering―a skill useful for Italic and other forms of Blackletter writing. Students will also delve into proper spacing and layout of this hand to maintain its integrity and legibility.
