These gorgeous pearlescent colors are handcrafted in Germany and dissolve with water and a brush, just like traditional watercolors. Lightfast, pigment-rich, and can adhere to a variety of surfaces, including paper, wood, cardboard, clay, and stone. FINETEC watercolors work great with brushes and dip pens; simply brush the color onto your nib to use it as a calligraphy ink. For best results, squeeze a few drops of water onto the surface of the watercolor and allow it to sit for a few minutes before using.

Most colors show up vibrantly on both dark and light papers. Some colors appear differently on different colored surfaces. Color chart showcases each FINETEC watercolor on both black and white paper.

This set includes one pan each of the following colors: Sky Blue, Lagoon, Mermaid, Blackberry, Fiji, and Apple Green, all packaged in a black covered palette.

I bought these watercolors because I read that they could be used with pointed pen calligraphy. I had never thought to use watercolors in that way, so I was immediately interested—especially in watercolors that specifically state that usage as one of their features. I chose these in particular (there are many color sets) because I was drawn to the colors. And they truly are beautiful. They have a vibrant shine and some of them even shift from one color to another as you look at them from different angles. That’s about where my delight ends with these though, unfortunately. As the instructions state, putting water on the color and leaving them might be recommended, but they also require stirring. Lots of stirring. I find this most effectively done with a brush, and then painted on the nib, but the paint dries so fast that it really doesn’t flow out of my pen very well (or at all) and I end up wasting so much of it because it also dries in the brush and I can’t reuse any of that. These are great colors, don’t get me wrong. But to specifically market one of their uses as pointed pen calligraphy is quite a stretch, in my opinion. I would much more highly recommend Dr. Ph Martin’s iridescent inks for fun a pointed pen calligraphy shine. These are probably better off left just for watercolor painting with a brush. Reply from PIA: I wanted to check in with you to see if this is still your experience with this product after some practice? It is by far our most popular and recommended watercolor for calligraphy. I am wondering if you need to add some more water to help it flow and not dry as quickly. Some of the colors require more water used because of the pigments in them. Some calligraphers also prefer to put it into a larger inkwell and let the color soak in water overnight and then directly dip their nibs into that “ink.” Like you said in your post, it is easiest to use when mixing with a brush and then painted onto the nib. The Postman’s Knock has a wonderful video on using these watercolors with nibs, I have found that to be very helpful.
