Vibrant, Gelly Roll Glaze Pens give a glossy, raised effect on paper, plastic, ceramic, or metal surfaces. Write with the look of embossing without powders or heat tool. Closed surface (vellum or coated) papers work best so that ink sits on the paper rather than being absorbed. They are also glossy on other papers but with less raised effects. Water-resistant glaze acts like a resist to create the look of batik; use the clear pen to add shine or create a secret message which is revealed when chalk or watercolor is applied on top.

I purchased these pens several years ago, not really knowing what they were all about or how to use them. I just really like the Gelly Roll brand And was hoping to complete my collection. I was a little dismayed, however, to find that these pens don’t really work for average paper. I got them along with the Soufflé set, and they all just kind of bled and blotched. So I did some more reading and discovered that both those sets are ideal for nonporous surfaces like plastic or glass. I don’t really do work on those mediums, So I set them aside for several years thinking maybe a need for them would come up. It didn’t. PaperInkArts sent out an e-mail featuring the Gelly Roll brand recently, however, and when I was perusing through it, I noticed a section for the Glaze pens. Not only are they suitable for nonporous surfaces, but they are also great for “top coating” things and basically putting your own personal embossed design on something. The clear pen is especially useful in this way, as it can go over any color. After this discovery, these are some of my most-used pens. They just need to be used on the right paper (I wasn’t using something thick enough and it was absorbing all the ink, instead of letting it rest on top of it) and they put down a beautiful 3-dimensional texture to your work. They’re great on dark colored paper for something subtle, and also in combination with markers or other media, to give areas a special pop. I’m so glad the clear is sold separately, and in a 2-pack, because it’s about the only one I use, and the ink goes fast. I also love that you can change the speed and pressure of the stroke to effect how much ink deposits on an area (for example: slower, harder strokes put down more ink). For really dimensional effects, definitely go over multiple times, allowing ink to dry in between. The dry-time is a bit of a downside for me though, as it does take a minute or two for the ink to be smudge-proof. Large areas need to be worked on with care and patience. Also, because of the shiny glossy effect, it can be difficult to tell when exactly the ink is dry. So it’s a bit of a guessing game when I’m in a hurry. I also really wish these pens came in a .5mm tip size! The 1.0mm is probably great for most people, but I do a lot of fine detail work and find it difficult to cover finer lines. The ink in these pens is clear though, so it really isn’t all that bad if it doesn’t cover the detail underneath perfectly. If they’re being used to draw designs on their own, however, then I definitely find it more challenging. They’re just not really suitable for fine detail. All in all though, these pens add a completely new and exciting element to my work and I absolutely love them. Do your research on them before you buy, and make sure you give them a fair shot with a variety of different materials before you shoot them down. They’re very versatile, but not like normal Gelly Roll pens!
