My Forest and Japanese Panel Workshop - Gabriela Soba

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

This workshop was born while I was writing Haikus, inspired by the deep connection between nature and creativity. As in most of my projects, the use of different tools came to my mind, and then, letters were born. The essence of this experience is to explore quotes, letters, techniques and reflections about nature, bringing them into visual art.

We will create an alphabet based on formal letterforms, combining them with organic and botanical shapes, designing texts that, when arranged together, create a textured space. Each participant will develop their own exploration, resulting in a wide variety of final works.

This is an experimental workshop where we explore different working tools, including various ruling tools, all kinds of brushes, pencils, and pastels, to create unique final details on paper. Additionally, we will use papers of different thicknesses, ranging from the thinnest 30/40 g to the thickest up to 300 g.

We will experiment with painting and dyeing paper, using techniques (embossing or sewing) to achieve interesting visual effects.

What will we do?
First steps and handwriting variations:
Each participant will explore different styles of handwriting, choosing the one that feels most comfortable or even creating your own personal alphabet.

Drawing with pencil and nib:
We’ll learn to combine lines and strokes to bring our designs to life. Movements, variations, stretching, exploring rhythm with brushes and ruling pens

Creating our own canvas:
We’ll merge our personal “forests” with letters and thin papers, integrating all elements into a unique piece. (Different combinations, different designs, so probably students will have more than one piece of art)

Making a mixed media or textile panel:
We’ll finish the workshop by designing a panel inspired by Japanese aesthetics, using mixed media techniques and, if you wish, incorporating textile elements or threads.

SKILL LEVEL: No previous experience in bookbinding or art techniques is required. This workshop is suitable for both beginners and experienced artists.
