Rambunctious Roman Variations by Reggie Ezell – Level: (I/A) Intermediate/Advanced
OK. So you wake up with the worst head cold in your life and this afternoon you have a commission due: a short quote that has to look exuberant, and you sure don't feel that way. What do you do? How do you make letterforms look happy, dancing, even rambunctious?! Using various kinds of metal nibs we will start with Romans (and Roman-inspired letters) and morph them from stately and dignified to energetic and jubilant.
Class Supplies
Pens, etc:
- Double-ended wooden pen handle
- Broad edge nibs: sizes 1 mm through 3 mm (See “Broad Edge Equivalency Guide” for various makes. Use the make that you like the best. Please consider, if you are writing on a flat surface, i.e. table top, then you must have nibs that have reservoirs. If you are writing on a slant board then you will not have to use reservoirs on the nibs.
- Speedball “B” nibs: sizes B-2, 3, 4, 5
- Pointed nibs: two or three of your favorites
- Ruling pen
Papers:
- Arches watercolor paper 90lb HP—10 sheets 8 1/2" x 11"
- Tracing paper—10 sheets 8 1/2" x 11"
- Pacon Drawing paper—20 sheets 8 1/2" x 11"
Writing Fluids - It would be best to use any writing fluids that you feel comfortable
with. Having said that, these are the ones that I would recommend:
- Ink—Moon Palace Sumi black
- Watercolors or Gouaches Winsor Newton: Payne’s gray, alizarin crimson, indigo, Windsor violet, Windsor green (blue shade), permanent white (titanium), cadmium red
- Any black or color ink sticks from Boku Undo and the accompanying grinding stone for them.
Other:
- Gum sandarac
- Gum arabic
- Ruler (at least 12") and/or triangle
- Mechanical pencil, 2H lead or harder
- Sharpener for mechanical pencil
- White vinyl eraser
- Dropper and water
- Six-part mixing pans, 2 or 3
- Water bowl
- Mixing brushes
- Pointed brushes, sizes 0 and larger
- Ames Lettering Guide
- Scotch Removable Tape
- Small light box (optional)
- Slant board—if you use one for your lettering
